Editorial Policy

MagineBook makes books for children aged 1 to 10. Children's books carry a unique responsibility: parents trust us with the bedtime story, the first word a child recognises, the feeling they take into sleep. This Editorial Policy is how we earn that trust. It is not a marketing page — it describes the actual guardrails our system applies before any book reaches you.

Age-appropriateness

Every book is tuned to the age you select at checkout. We adjust three things explicitly:

• Vocabulary — simpler words and shorter sentences for ages 1–4; richer vocabulary with occasional stretch-words for ages 7–10.
• Pacing — fewer plot beats and more repetition for toddlers; multi-scene adventures for older children.
• Themes — curiosity, friendship, bravery, and kindness across all ages, with complexity calibrated to what an age group can emotionally process.

Safety guardrails

MagineBook actively rejects content that is inappropriate for young readers. Our prompting system and post-generation validation filter out:

• Physical violence, injury, weapons, or blood.
• Scary, horror, or frightening themes (monsters chasing, death, abandonment).
• Sexual or romantic content of any kind.
• Substance use, gambling, or self-harm references.
• Hateful, discriminatory, or demeaning portrayals of any group.
• Real-world tragedy, political conflict, or news-driven themes.

If a user prompt pushes toward any of these, the story is steered toward a safe alternative or the submission is rejected.

Validation before delivery

Every book is generated and then checked by an automated validator that scans both the text and the illustrations for prohibited content, garbled output, missing elements, and prompt-echo artefacts. Books that fail validation are regenerated automatically. Books that fail twice are flagged for human review before anything is sent to you.

Positive representation

Children should see themselves — and other kinds of children — as heroes of their own stories. We do three specific things:

• Our character generation offers a wide range of skin tones, hair types, and features, and honors whatever photo or description you provide.
• Supporting characters in our templates include a variety of ages, abilities, and family structures. A child using a wheelchair, a grandparent co-star, and a two-dad family are all generated naturally when relevant.
• Gender is kept open: bravery, softness, curiosity, and leadership are written as universal traits, never as boy-traits or girl-traits.

Human oversight of AI outputs

Generative AI is the engine, but humans set the rules and watch the output. Our editorial team reviews samples of generated books weekly, updates prompts when we see drift, and hand-reviews any book flagged by validation. We do not ship prompts-as-a-service — we ship a curated pipeline we keep tuning.

Continuous improvement

Parents tell us what works and what does not. Every piece of feedback at [email protected] is read by a human and routed to either engineering (for technical issues) or editorial (for content issues). Patterns inform prompt updates, validator rules, and new templates. This is slow, unglamorous work, and it is the main reason book quality improves over time.

When we reject a submission

We will refuse to generate a book that asks for:

• A real, identifiable person other than the intended child (celebrities, classmates, neighbours).
• Themes that conflict with the safety guardrails above.
• Content that targets, mocks, or excludes a specific child or group.
• Clearly unsafe instructions (e.g. teaching a child to do something dangerous).

When we reject a submission we refund any payment in full and explain briefly what triggered the decision so you can resubmit if you wish.

Handling concerns

If you open a book and something feels off — a phrase that reads strangely to your child, an illustration that missed the mark, a theme that surprised you — please tell us. Email [email protected] with your order ID. We treat content concerns as seriously as technical bugs: they are fixed for your book first, and then folded into the system so the next family's book is better.
